On 9th December, 1914, the 1st Honourable Artillery Company battalion of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division moved into the front line at Kemmel in Belgium with two companies in the trenches and the other two in reserve. According to the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Charles Smallman was killed on 12th December but the battalion diary recorded that he was killed on10th December when there was heavy shell fire throughout the day.. |
